Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most common questions about our staining services so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

Q1: Should I stain a brand-new cedar fence?

Yes.

New cedar is the easiest place to start because you're protecting the wood before years of UV, rain and weathering change its appearance. If you like the colour of your new cedar, staining helps preserve that look longer.

Q2: Can you stain an older or weathered fence?

Usually. Grey or dirty cedar doesn't necessarily need replacing.

Send us a few photos and we'll determine whether it can be cleaned, prepared and stained. Heavily weathered or damaged fencing may require additional restoration.

Q3: Can you stain over an existing stain or coating?

It depends on the existing product and its condition.

Peeling coatings, paint and some previous finishes may need to be stripped or sanded before applying a new stain. We'll identify any required preparation before work begins.

Q4: What's included with standard fence staining?

Sansin® stain, professional application, both accessible sides of standard fence panels, basic masking and protection, labour, setup and cleanup. Standard pricing assumes new or properly prepared bare wood.

Q5: Is cleaning, sanding or stripping included?

Not in our standard staining prices. Cleaning, stripping, heavy sanding, restoration, difficult access and extensive masking are priced separately when required.

We'll confirm any additional preparation before the job begins — no surprise prep charges.

Q6: How long will the stain last?

Sansin lists a typical 3–6 year maintenance cycle for SDF on vertical surfaces such as fencing. Actual timing varies with sun, rain, colour, wood condition and exposure. We recommend inspecting the finish periodically rather than waiting for the wood to deteriorate.
